5 Dream Jobs

Ever since I can remember (my guess is when I was about 9), I wanted to have a job that had something to with writing

That’s what drove me to choose a career as a journalist, although I ended up liking more to write as a translator. And obviously, the ultimate goal was (and still is, as a matter of fact) to able to say to people: “I’m a writer”, whenever they ask me what do I do for living.

And it was thinking about writing and all the other things I love that I decided to list the Top 5 jobs that would be a dream to have:

05 – PR for The Beatles – Can you imagine? Be right there in the eye of the hurricane of the greatest cultural revolution ever? Become friends with Paul, John, George and Ringo? Write the releases for Sgt.Pepper’s, the White Album, Magical Mistery Tour? And be present at Beatles parties and maybe even sneak a peek at recording sessions. And to top it off, be able to release a great book of Beatles stories afterwards!

04 – New Musical Express in the 60’s and 70’s – At this situation, you not only have The Beatles again, but all the other greatest bands of all time. Living in the Swinging Sixties London, interviewing Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Rober Plant, Tony Iommi, Jon Lord, David Gilmour, among others. If you’re lucky, you could get to travel with Led Zeppelin to one of those legendary American tours. And in the end of the seventies witness Punk at firsthand: Pistols, Clash, Damned.

03 – Sporting News from the 20’s to the 70’s – You obviously wouldn’t work all this time but any of those decades would be amazing. Witness and talk to the best of all time in baseball: Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Williams, Mantle, Berra, Yastrzemski, Robinson, Koufax, Aaron (the list goes on and on). See the birth of the NBA and witness the beginning of the Super Bowl era. Talk to Unitas and Namath.

02- Sports Illustrated in the 80’s – Wouldn’t be wonderful to see the NBA becoming the multi-million industry it is today? Talk to Jordan, Magic, Bird, Wilkins, Ewing. Watch courtside to those epic Lakers vs. Celtics games, see the Pistons’ Bad Boys first hand. Check out Ditka’s Bear defense at Soldiers Field, talk to Joe Montana and Jerry Rice. And cover Wayne Gretzky in the NHL and “The Trade”.

01-   Hit Parader in the mid-to-late 80’s. – That’s the greatest dream of all. Covering the Sunset Strip and seeing first hand shows by: Mötley Crüe, Poison, Ratt and Cinderella. Then going to the Bay Area and witnessing the birth of Thrash: Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Dark Angel, Exodus. Watching the US Festival in 83 from the wings. And going to Mötley Crüe or Van Halen most debauched parties ever, with the greatest groupies of the era! Talk to Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil, Tommy Lee, Robin Crosby, C.C. De Ville, Cliff Burton, Steve Clark and Dave Lee Roth.

Of course, there are more people and facts that could be remembered in all those examples these are just the ones that I thought about it now. And that is not to say that I’m not happy with my job. I love my job, but those would have been a real dream!
